Tao Te Ching: The New Translation
Published in Paperback by Penguin USA (Paper) (September, 1997)
Authors: Man-Ho Kwok, Martin Palmer, Jay Ramsay, and Lao Tzu
Average review score:

Susan Galey needs to learn little more Chinese and Asian art
... Those pictures are 100% Chinese paintings and the difference between Chinese paintings and Japanese painting are very distinguished. (By the way, I am a Chinese American, and know both Chinese and Japanese cultures, including language and art, quite well.)

The best translation I have seen
I have read countless translations of Lao Tzu's Tao Te Ching. This is simply the best.

The perfect new enbodiment of an ancient text
This book has given the ancient text of the Tao Te Ching new life. Each colorful page exudes the beauty and culture of the text. Japanese Art and Characters accompany the poetic translation. Anyone interested in Taoism would find this not only beautiful but also an informative treasure. This is not an item easily lost in your personal library. It is more likely to find its home on the coffee table.

Tasha Tudor's Heirloom Crafts
Published in Paperback by Mariner Books (October, 2000)
Author: Tovah Martin
Average review score:

Wonderful, and inspiring
Tasha Tudor is a kindred spirit and this book is a treasure, full of photographs and text on her life and loves, from making baskets, to processing wool from her sheep, milk from her goats, or baking with the eggs her hens provide. Candle making, drying flowers, growing and processing flax into linen, making pottery, raising a vegetable, herbs and flower gardens as well as making hand cream and sewing everything from quilts to clothing.

I guess one reason I wanted and love this book is it shows that one can in 2002 still savor the arts of the past and provide a lot of what one needs to survive day to day. And being small homesteaders in the Sierras I felt as if I were reading the diary or how to journal of one of my older neighbors. The book is one that I can really identify with.

This is a book that anyone who loves making things with their hands will love. And it is a wonderful book for reminding people of what is really important in life.

When I grow up I want to be just like Tasha!!
Wow! I have always been fascinated by the processes of making things by hand and really starting from the ground up. Tasha Tudor lives her entire life this way, starting with flax seeds and ending up three years later with a hand woven, hand sewn linen shirt.

Little did I know, at age six, reading The Doll's House, that the illustrator of this lovely children's book was also a kindred spirt. I wish I lived closer to Vermont and could go visit and learn from this amazing wise woman!

A Book of Dreams
I spend hours looking through this book and marveling at Tasha Tudor's 1830's lifestyle. This is truly a book of dreams -- well...my dreams anyway. Travel through the seasons with Tasha as she cards linen to be woven, sews, stitches, spins, weaves, knits, and cooks.

The photographs are lovely. You will marvel at Tasha's creations. And you'll end up wanting to see her other books in order to get a further glimpse into her life, her home, and her gardens.

This is not a book of crafting instructions or patterns, but it will still be an inspiration to those, like me, who long for a simpler life and who wax nostalgic for the past.

deeply spiritual and very poetic
Made me think of God and evil. Made me revise my whole life. The book is shaping my future with a powerful force. Is making me to live my life fully and to get in touch with my inner self in a way unknown to me. Thank God for having read it!

Beautiful, God inspired, deep, fulfilling. Changed my life
One of the best spiritual books I have ever read. Will raise questions in those with no moral principles or in search of God.Made me realize the Sodomistic society in which we live today. Showed me a path to follow, a path I like to believe. It touched my realm of inner truth.

What every man on earth should know today
Beautiful. God inspired. Has lifted my spirit to the realm of tears and repentance. A book for everyone interested in salvation. A magnificent guide to heaven. Touches the soul in a very poetic way. The prophesies included are very important to better comprehend the hard times ahead in a vision of hope.

Ten Stocks that Could Change the World
An amazing book featuring companies that have fascinating products. Certainly a "field to watch" of tech savvy, smart companies.

An invaluable resource for the smart investor...
This book has already provided me with excellent guidance and I anticipate relying heavily on the wisdom Larry Waschka shares in this book as I further refine my long-term investment strategy. No informed investor should miss this book.

The "lightbulb" lit up several times -
I enjoyed reading the book. I now understand some of the complexities of the revolutions in technology ie. photonics, e-learning, and fiber optics. The chapter on photonics was particularly interesting to me. Thanks for taking the mystery out of those technologies that at one time I thought I would never get my brain around! Kudos!!!

The Theatre of the Absurd
Published in Paperback by Viking Press (May, 1983)
Author: Martin Esslin
Average review score:

None Finer
If you have ever wished for one book to neatly package absurdist theatre, Mr. Esslin's book is the one. This book is readable, comprehendable, entertaining and engaging. In fact, it's rather difficult to put down. His introduction does wonders to dispel any myths as to what absurdist theatre is and isn't. He follows the introduction by individually highlighting those playwrights often associated with the absurd (Beckett, Adamov, Ionesco, Genet, and Pinter). Of interest is the fact that he does not overwhelm or bore the reader by providing an excess of information. On the contrary, each section is unbelievably tight. His section on Adamov is much appreciated, considering that finding anything on him is near impossible. He then continues with his "Parallels and Proselytes" in which he touches on "lesser-known" playwrights (Albee, Arrabal, and others). He follows this section with three more equally fascinating chapters. In short, Mr. Esslin packs a breadth of relevant information into 480 pages. "The Theatre of the Absurd" should find a welcome home on the bookshelves of actors, directors, dramaturgs, playwrights, or those with an interest in theatre. Buy it, you won't be disappointed.

a must read for the theatre teacher.
Esslin outlines important facts about this complicated and confusing theatrical movement. He helps provide a basic understanding for anyone who would like to know about Beckett, Ionesco, Adamov, Genet, and Pinter. Absurdism is probably the least understood of all modern theatrical movements of the twentieth century, but Esslin makes it accessible. If you study, teach, design,or perform in the theatre you need to read this book, it is the authoritative text on absurdist theatre.

A classic on the history of theatre and thought
I came to read this book for a paper I decided to write on Samuel Beckett, for my Theory of History course. A friend who's an actress recommended it for me, and it was an amazing discovery. From an historian's point of view, this book is a rich, challenging and informative approach to one of the most important aspects of the ideology crisis from the beginning of the XXth. Century. As I came to know later, it's a classic on the theatre field as well.

Apart from Beckett and some minor authors, there are chapters on Adamov, Ionescu, Genet and Pinter, and a superb essay on the meaning of the concept of "absurd" of human existence. A must read for anyone who wishes to understand not only the art, but the ideas which shaped the latest century.

The Theft of the Anasazi Pots
Published in Paperback by Old Hogan Publishing Co. (03 November, 1999)
Author: Martin Garaway
Average review score:

Fast, fun, intriguing read, with authenticity & good twists!
Congrats to 86-year old Martin Garaway for writing such a fine mystery novel, which proved to be a real page-turner for me. I couldn't wait to see what would happen next! Also, the author made wonderful use of the experiences he had while living on the Navajo reservation (the setting for his book) and in London, lending such authenticity and life to his characters, plot and sub-plots. The way in which one of the sub-plots was wrapped up was not what I expected (nor would have wanted) it to be, but nonetheless, was fairly realistic. And there was a wonderful twist at end of the book!

The Theft of the Anasazi Pots
Finally a hero who is not super gorgeous, brillant and always one step ahead of the bad guys. He's just someone who, like the rest of us, finds out that life doesn't always go the way one plans. His battle to fashion a secure and comfortable life takes him from job politics to geopolitics, using everything he knows or learns from disparate cultures. We worry about him and cheer for him all through the surprising and exciting journey.

A "Keep you Interested Every Minute" Book
This book is fascinating in that there is continuous action with surprises at every juncture. The myriad of settings and changing circumstances is unusual and extremely involving. In all it is a very intriguing story.

The Theology of Martin Luther
Published in Paperback by Fortress Press (December, 1966)
Authors: Paul Althaus and Robert C. Schultz
Average review score:

A Superb Text
This is a comprehensive and systematic survey of the theology of Martin Luther. While Luther himself never wrote a systematic theology text, he did, nonetheless, write enough material for a researcher to gather and assimilate such a text. This is the very thing Paul Althaus accomplished in this text.

Althaus is considered by many to be a foremost authority in Reformation studies. This text certainly bears that out. Althaus presents the main theological questions of Luther in precise and clear fashion. Moreover, Althaus provides plenty of direct quotes from Luther's works to support the theological views presented. I believe that Althaus intended to remain true to Luther's original thought without attempting to add his own opinion's which might otherwise alter what Luther meant in each topic.

This work is richly footnoted with Luther's original works, and other's who have commented on Luther's works. The text itself is divided into two parts-part one is the 'Knowledge of God' and part two is 'God's Work.'-yet each of these parts has subchapters dealing with topics such as the general and proper knowledge of God, the theology of the cross, faith, reason, the Holy Scriptures, law and gospel, the Trinity, and much, much more.

This would be a great text for anyone who collects and reads systematic theology texts, who wants a greater understand of what Luther espoused and taught, anyone studying the Reformation, and for anyone who is studying theology. It is well written and accessible to the lay person and scholar alike. I highly recommend this book!

The Best One Volume Introduction To Luther's Theology
I don't have this book in English. I have it only in Chinese. In some ways, the meanings of the words comes out even clearer in Chinese. But that's that.

Where I come from, Christian bookshops hardly carry much books by Luther or even on Lutheran theology. Actually, bookshops around here hardly carry any good theology books with substance. People here lap up the latest marshmallow-devotional and/or pop-psychology-self-help garbage but not good theology. Again, that's that.

Now on to the book itself:

Althaus have always been recognised as providing us with the standard textbook on Luther's Theology. In some ways, many (myself included) prefer reading Althaus' Luther than Luther's Luther! What I mean is this - Luther's writings covered such a large spectrum of differing theological perspectives and here, Althaus synthesizes his writings under appropriate subject headings to let the readers see how Luther's mind works. But instead of merely giving the readers his own views on those same subjects, Althaus includes thousands of quotations direct from Luther's writings and sermons (thus allowing Luther himself to speak to the reader - albeit in a more systematic manner!).

Highly recommended primer on Luther. Read this first. Then seek out the actual works of Luther.

Excellent Research Source
This book was extremely helpful in researching several papers for my religion course titled the History of Christian Thought. It is very thorough and easy to understand.

To support my friend
Beside the point Martin Elster is the greatest artist in the Connecticut. He is also a compositor. A joyful collection of engaging short poems
There's A Dog In The Heavens! A Universe of Canine Verse is a joyful collection of engaging short poems by Martin Elster celebrating canine companions everywhere, from mutts to purebreds to foxes and wolves. A round of lyrical fun especially recommended for dog lovers everywhere. Use Your Head: Your puppy's like a two-year-old:/An explorer, inquisitive, bold./If she chews up your stuff/Try not to be rough/And don't punish her, hit her, or scold.//Just buy her some dog toys instead/So she won't go and chew your bedspread./If she does, don't yell "No!"/Say "Off!" and then show/Her a brand new stuffed toy -- use your head!

There's a Dog in the Heavens! by Martin Elster
The poems in this book range from whimsical, even silly to thought-provoking and philosophical, encompassing almost every aspect of dogdom. There are fantastic story-poems about flying dogs, Yorkies so small they are smaller than a mole, A mystery/horror story about a mongrel at the vet's (which turns out to be the owner's nightmare ... or does it?) There are educational poems about training, dog body language, and canine health matters (with natural remedies); poems about famous dogs and heroic dogs from history. In fact, there are poems in here about almost any dog related theme, from the Dog Star to Laika, the first creature in space. Besides pet dogs, there are numerous poems about wild canids such as wolves, dingos, African Cape hunting dogs, coyotes and others. I found the book highly entertaining and informative. I recommend this book to anyone who loves dogs.

Thunder in the Heavens: Classic American Aircraft of World War II

Authors: Patrick Bunce and Martin W. Bowman

WoW
like you have never seen before. fresh and new. if you are not a vet you can feel what it was like to fly and experence the feelings of the men who flew the one and only WWII aircraft.!!

Imagination gets the best of me guy
The type of book you would sit on a balcony outside and read/look at while imagining a b-17 flying fortress flying right in front of you.....then you suddenly appear in the plane, the pilot is yelling for you to drop the bombs so you can get the heck out of there, but you have to wait till the target appears in your bomb site, then you flip the trigger......bomb after bomb fall into the clear sky as you watch the industrial plants and ship yards of Hamburg Germany ignite into a fireworks display......then you suddenly appear back on your balcony starring into the open clear sky, just hoping that big four engined, porky pined hunk of steel comes out of the sky ready to pick you up for another mission......Yes the book is that good...go get it now!

Superior Air-to-Air Photography
One of the best compilations of air-to-air photography ever seen, of WWII or other aircraft. This book is on the level of John Dibbs' 'Flying Legends,' but whereas the Dibbs book provides elegant, formally posed portraits of the aircraft, this title shows the birds in more atmospheric settings, but does not sacrifice the sharp focus of Dibbs' work.

This book contains the best air-to-air pictures of any B-29 I have ever seen. They are, of course, of FIFI, the CAF bird. They possess the rare magic that the best of air-to-air photographs have, of making you feel you're actually flying along in the photoship.
